VIDEO DESCRIPTION:

A new irrigation system, provided by a group called CEDICAM, is providing seeds and equipment to farmers with the belief that successful harvests depend on more han just being able to use what little rainfaull there is.

CEDICAM organises wokshops in remote villages to teach local farmers how the combination of pre-colonial farming practices, such as terracing and ditch building, with a modern, scientific understanding of the environment can lead to huge increases in productivity.

As a result, the land is fertile. There is no need for villages to disappear, and for the soil to be left unattended, as their populations seek work elsewhere. Yet much of rural Mexico has not been so lucky.

Al Jazeera’s Shihab Rattansi reports from Oaxaca in Mexico.

Posting because I feel this is a very serious issue for feminism and men and men who identify as feminists. Looking forward to these reads. By the way I am not a feminist. My ist starts with the letter A……

goodmenproject:

If there’s one thing we’re all about here at the Good Men Project, it’s discussion. So when our erstwhile founder Tom Matlack wrote a controversial post about how he sees the role of feminism in discussions of men’s issues, we figured this was something worth talking about. Below you’ll find Tom’s original post, as well as a collection of response pieces from a number of our favorite contributors, representing many different points of view on this important issue.

Why Being a Good Man is NOT a Feminist Issue

Tom Matlack envisions a place where men can share stories of their struggle for goodness man-to-man apart from what women or feminists might say about that story.

♦◊♦

Why Being a Good Man is Definitely a Feminist Issue

Noah Brand makes the case that gender theory applies to both genders.

♦◊♦

These Are The Stories that Change Everything

Lisa Hickey responds to an article in The Atlantic about ‘having it all’ and debates feminism and Tom Matlack along the way.

♦◊♦

Is Men vs. Feminism Even a Relevant Discussion?

Jesse Kornbluth asks why, with women’s rights under attack in America and around the world, we should argue about who gets to be in the club against these abuses.

♦◊♦

Men’s Goodness Hinges on Hearing Women’s Voices: A Response to Tom Matlack

Hugo Schwyzer sees a world where men can be better, happier and different by including women’s voices in the telling of stories about men.

♦◊♦

Private—Men Only

Dan Griffin thinks there’s a place for single-gender spaces, so long as the people involved are genuinely of good will.

♦◊♦

It’s About Men: A Response to Tom Matlack

Let’s create a movement by and for men and be as great as we can be, says Zek Evans. Let’s do something good.

♦◊♦

Shawn Maxam explains how power dynamics and issues of privilege can distract us from the real conversations men need to be having.

The black flag represents the absence of a flag, and thus stands in opposition to the very notion of nation-states. In that light, the flag can be seen as a rejection of the concept of representation, or the idea that any person or institution can adequately represent a group of individuals.

The uniform blackness of the flag is in stark contrast to the colorful flags typical of most nation-states. Additionally, as a white flag is the universal symbol for surrender to superior force, the counter-opposite black flag would logically be a symbol of defiance and opposition to surrender.

I don”t want to see any more men and women giving their energy, their health, their minds, their future to enrich the bourgeoisie. I don’t want men to command men any longer. I’m resolved to continue fighting for the cause of the Partido Liberal Mexicano, and if you’re a man, come with me to the battle. If that’s not the case, forget me; I don’t want to be the partner of a coward.”

Margarita Ortega was born to a family of bourgeios and proletarians who aspired to be bourgeios. For her life she chose to disconnect and join in the struggle of poor Mexicans who she felt brotherhood/sisterhood with. Along with her daughter Rosaura she fought and aided the Mexican Revolution with anarchist values and a hope for a day when Mexicans could be free. She was tortured and assassinated after her capture in Baja California after refusing to offer any information about the insurgency. Even to her death she remained committed to Mexican Anarchism and refused to participate within the sphere of politics that needed dismantling and not reform. Her hopes and the hopes of the Mexican Revolution never came to fruition but all over the world the Spirit of women like Margarita and her daughter Rosaura survive with the possibility of a freedom not far off.

Preaching Peace is a Crime

“Liberty or death” ought to be our cry, and upon hearing it we should rise first to crush the cowards who preach peace, and then the tyrants.

Ricardo Flores Magon

This is a excerpt from a essay by Flores Magon where he challenges the idea of whose benefit the peace movement is working for. A movement that he critiques only sustains the environment of white supremacy by leading masses of people directly into its system. It’s just a critique!

A feminist symbol of the Mexican Revolution, La Adelita was the name of a woman soldier, a soldadera, who followed the troops, helped set up camp, and cooked for the soldiers

The legend states that Adelita was a woman who fought in the Revolution. It is not known if she actually existed as an individual, but she came to epitomize all soldaderas and courageous women of that period.

La Adelita is more than a romantic image to modern-day Chicanas. She continues to symbolize feminine independence, integrity, the fight or justice, and a proud heritage.

An extensive criticism of anti-oppression politics, their relation to non-profits, capitalism and the state, as well as how they play out in movements such as Occupy.

This pamphlet – written collaboratively by a group of people of color, women, and queers – is offered in deep…

This is a great article that dives into a handful of issues relating to radical organizing. There are good critiques of the Bay Area and the Occupy Movement. My favorite section is on non-profits. ‘Radical in form, liberal in content.’

djphatrick:

How you can use your white privilege.

social action continuum

This is hella dope. The only thing that isn’t really touched upon however, is the fact that without the sister-in-law being a person of color (who passes for white), she may not have ever noticed a single thing wrong with what was occurring in the check-out line. There is a stark difference to me between having “whiteness” privilege (the ability for someone whose family and ancestors have and continue to be directly affected by white supremacy and can “pass”) and “white privilege.” “White privilege,” I’d argue, means never being forced to confront issues of historical/present racist demonization within/around yourself and your family members. From my (biased) perspective, this woman’s sister in law used her “whiteness” privilege to be an ally to her Black family member that she saw suffering unjustly. “White privilege” to me, would have been her simply walking away and carrying on without a care in the world as the bullshit went down.

Lessons on how to use privilege for justice.
